Start by making your business and its website easier to understand, then test what is actually visible. AI-generated search answers change how information can be presented, but they do not remove the need for accurate content, useful evidence and a working site. Avoid treating a new label as a reason to abandon those foundations.
This is a source-led interpretation of Google's current guidance and our practical recommendations. It is not a report of DC Digital achieving a particular AI-search result, and Google's guidance does not describe every other provider's system.
What does Google actually require?
Google says its established SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Pages need to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to qualify as supporting links. Its AI-features guidance says there is no special additional markup or machine-readable file required for these features, and inclusion is not guaranteed.
That leaves a practical starting point: examine the website you have before buying an entirely different description of the work it needs. You can test where you stand with our marketing AI readiness assessment, which takes eight questions and needs no email address.
Can a reader work out what the business does?
Read the main pages as a person unfamiliar with your company. Can they identify the service, who it is for and what the business can show to support its claims?
Our recommendation is to resolve unclear scope before expanding the volume of content. Ten pages repeating broad promises do not give a buyer ten useful answers.
Give each page a defined job. A service page explains the offer; a case explains actual work; an article answers a distinct question. Link them where the relationship helps the reader rather than making every page cover everything.
What information can you substantiate?
Check business details, author information, services and project claims against the real source. Where a number matters, keep its period and meaning visible.
Distinguish evidence from interpretation. You can explain why you recommend a particular approach without presenting that recommendation as a measured result. You can show a delivered website without claiming it caused an increase in sales.
For a small business, this review can be very concrete. Choose a prominent statement on the homepage and ask where its evidence is kept. If nobody can answer, either find the evidence or change the claim.
Which technical checks still deserve attention?
Check that the important pages can be reached and read, that links work and that the production site's search settings fit the intended visibility. Make useful information available as text, with relevant visuals supporting it.
Have the technical owner assess structured data against what the page actually says. Adding a description that is absent from the visible page is not a sound way to make the business more understandable.
Our SEO service treats the content, technical setup and evidence as connected work. AI search belongs in that discussion, with the limits of what can be measured made clear.
How should you assess a claimed improvement?
Keep a record of the question tested, provider, date and conditions. Save what was observed and separate it from what you infer. One favourable answer is an observation, not proof that every prospective buyer sees the same result.
Compare the website and enquiries as well as the search presentation. Visibility has a business purpose, but the relationship between a citation and a sale may not be observable in the data you hold.
Be equally careful with a negative result. A single test that does not mention the company is a reason to investigate, not a complete assessment of its presence.
What would we prioritise first?
- Correct the business information and important service explanations.
- Improve the evidence on the pages that matter commercially.
- Check that useful content is accessible and linked coherently.
- Record a repeatable baseline for the observations you want to review.
- Make specific improvements and examine the evidence afterwards.
This sequence is our recommended working approach, not a provider's ranking formula. It keeps the work tied to what a business can verify and improve.
If you want to review search visibility alongside the website and enquiry process, start an SEO discussion. We can establish the current position before deciding what needs changing.
