Websites and marketing for Southend-on-Sea businesses, Leigh-on-Sea included.

Nine in ten businesses in the city employ fewer than ten people, and construction is its largest business group.[1] We build websites, run search and social, and approach the organisations most likely to buy from firms like these, from our base elsewhere in Essex.

DC Digital builds websites and runs SEO, Google Ads, social media and SendIQ outbound for businesses in Southend-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea included. We’re based in Essex, not in the city, and there’s no office to visit: when it helps to meet, we set a date and David comes to you. CSF Building Contractors and Rose Associates are two of our Leigh clients.

The city’s businesses, in figures

Published figures for the whole city council area, which includes Leigh-on-Sea.[5] Nothing is published for Leigh on its own, so we don’t quote any.

What that mix means for your marketing

Our reading of the figures above. Each point starts from a published fact, not from guesses about how people here behave.

Most firms here are small

More than 90% of the city’s businesses are micro firms.[1] In a business that size the owner is usually doing the work and the selling, so the website and the Google Business Profile have to show the work, answer the obvious questions and take the enquiry while you’re busy. That’s usually where we’d start.

Construction is the biggest group

Construction makes up 17.0% of the city’s businesses, more than any other group and above the England share of 14.1%.[1] The council’s strategy lists specialist construction among its growth sectors.[3] Building firms are judged on their projects, so photographs, video and the people on site do more for them than any slogan.

The biggest employers are organisations, not shoppers

Health and education employ almost a third of the city’s employees between them.[2] The council names Olympus KeyMed, London Southend Airport and Ipeco as large employers, and says it wants small firms in the supply chains of larger organisations.[3] Selling to an organisation means reaching named decision-makers, which a website can’t do on its own. CSF Building Contractors, in Leigh-on-Sea, used SendIQ to approach decision-makers in NHS Property Services: national buyers, not local ones.

London is one train away

The council counts nine stations in the city with direct trains into Fenchurch Street or Liverpool Street,[3] and at the 2021 Census 5.4% of working residents travelled to work mainly by train, against 2.0% across England.[4] For your marketing, that’s a prompt to set your area by where your customers really are. If you sell into London or across Essex, your ads and your website should say so. If you only cover the SS postcodes, they should say that instead.

Questions from businesses in the city

All FAQs →

Yes, when meeting in person helps. We’re based in Essex rather than in the city and don’t have an office you can visit, so we agree a date and David comes to you. Most of the work itself runs on calls, email and WhatsApp, with a report every month.

Yes. Leigh is part of the city council area,[5] and three of the clients named on this page, CSF Building Contractors, Rose Associates and From Eden, are there. Everything on this page applies to a Leigh business in the same way, including the figures, which cover the whole council area.

Websites start from £999 plus VAT, one off. What moves the price is the number of pages, the depth of design, how much content we write and any integrations, such as quoting or booking tools. A project usually takes about 4 to 12 weeks. If you’re not sure you need a new site, start with a free website audit.

Yes, though it usually takes more than a website. A buyer in a large organisation may never search for you, so it helps to reach the right person directly. That’s what SendIQ does: we decide which organisations fit, find the decision-makers and write to them. For CSF Building Contractors, that meant decision-makers in NHS Property Services.

From official sources, listed under Sources below: ONS UK Business Counts 2026 and the Business Register and Employment Survey 2024 (both via Nomis), the 2021 Census, and the city council’s Economic Growth Strategy 2024 to 2028. Business count percentages are our own calculations from the published counts. We update them when new figures come out.
