SEO or Google Ads: which should you start with?

Start with the problem you need to solve. Google Ads can put a relevant offer in front of people searching now, subject to budget and campaign performance. SEO develops how your website answers those searches over time. If the page or enquiry process is weak, fix that before paying to bring more people to it.

Neither option is automatically the sensible one because you are a small business. A clear offer, a working website and the capacity to follow up matter more than the label on the channel.

Decide what you need to learn first

Write down the service you want to sell, the people who buy it and the area you can serve. Then state what you need the marketing to establish.

“More traffic” leaves too much unanswered. “More enquiries for this service from businesses we can actually help” gives the work a direction.

We would assess four things before choosing where to put the first effort:

Question Why it changes the decision
Is there relevant search demand? Both approaches need a useful connection between what people search for and what you sell
How soon do you need to test the offer? Timing affects whether a paid test belongs in the plan
Does the destination page explain the offer? A vague page makes either channel harder to judge
Can you track and handle enquiries? Unanswered or unrecorded enquiries make reporting less useful

This is a planning framework, not a prediction of what either channel will return.

What changes when you choose Google Ads first?

A paid search test gives you control over the campaign you put in market and the budget you commit to it. You still need to choose the searches, write the ads, build or improve the destination page and measure what happens after the click.

Before committing spend, examine the search terms and estimates for your service and location. Google's Keyword Planner guidance explains ways to refine keyword ideas. Estimates are planning inputs. They are not your future invoices or a guarantee of enquiries.

The practical question is whether you can fund a useful test and assess it honestly. A campaign that attracts the wrong work needs a different response from one that reaches the right buyers but sends them to a poor page.

Our Google Ads management starts from £600 a month including VAT (£500 plus VAT at 20%), with ad spend paid to Google separately. The minimum term is three months. That management price is not a recommended advertising budget: the spend has to fit the searches and the work you want.

What changes when you choose SEO first?

SEO starts with what the website already has and what a buyer needs to find. That may mean resolving technical obstacles, improving an important service page or creating a page for a service you sell but barely explain.

It also needs a way to decide what gets done next. A list of possible keywords is not enough. You need to know which page should answer each important search and what that page lacks.

Google's SEO starter guide says changes can take different lengths of time to show effects, from hours to several months, and that not every change creates a noticeable improvement. Treat any timetable as something to assess against your site, not a guaranteed date for results.

Our SEO service starts from £600 a month including VAT (£500 plus VAT at 20%), with a three-month minimum. The scope depends on the site's size, competition and content needs. We report monthly for both services.

A minimum term describes the agreement. It does not promise that every search goal will be reached within it.

Put the website in the decision

Look at the page a prospective customer would land on. Can they tell what you do, whether you serve them and how to take the next step? Does the form work? Does someone receive and answer the enquiry?

These are basic questions, but they are more useful than arguing about channels while a broken form sits underneath both.

DC Digital's own rebuild includes separate checks for page responses, enquiry handling and tracking. We keep those checks distinct because a page loading successfully does not prove that an enquiry reaches its destination. The same distinction belongs in a marketing plan.

If the website needs substantial work, separate that scope and cost from the ongoing marketing. Our website design service starts from £1,198.80 including VAT (£999 plus VAT at 20%) as a one-off project. Do not hide a rebuild inside an assumption that a monthly campaign fee covers everything.

Can the two approaches work together?

Yes, provided they have clear jobs and the budget can support them. A business might test a particular service through paid search while improving the website's longer-term coverage of its main services. That is an example of how to organise the work, not a claim about a client result.

Useful information can move between the two. Questions in paid-search enquiries may show something the service page needs to explain. Organic search data may reveal relevant searches worth investigating further. Review the evidence before turning either into a new task.

Paying Google does not buy a better organic ranking. Google states this explicitly in its paid and organic reporting guidance. Keep the reporting separate enough to see what each approach is contributing.

Make a decision you can review

Agree the first service to focus on, the work included, the spend, the enquiry definition and the review date. Record what would justify continuing, changing the approach or stopping a test.

An enquiry is not automatically good because a dashboard counted it. Consider whether it fits your service, whether the person can buy and whether the conversation moves forward. Avoid choosing a channel solely because its clicks look cheaper.

If you are deciding between the two, start a project. Tell us what you sell, who buys it and what you need to change. We can then discuss where the first effort belongs, using the same website, search and enquiry picture.
